Kenyans should brace for colder-than-usual days this July, especially across parts of central and western Kenya, the Nairobi region, and sections of the Rift Valley. According to the latest update from the Kenya Meteorological Department, these areas will experience cool, cloudy conditions with occasional light showers throughout the month.

Dr. David Gikungu, Director of the Meteorological Service, says some days could be particularly cold, with daytime temperatures dropping below 20°C due to continuous cloud cover. “We’re looking at significantly cooler conditions than normal in several regions,” he noted.

That said, much of the country is expected to experience warmer-than-average temperatures. “Only parts of Turkana and West Pokot will likely record lower than usual temperatures,” Dr. Gikungu added. In contrast, the northern region excluding Marsabit and parts of Isiolo is likely to experience highs above 30°C, while most other areas will remain in the 20–30°C range.

Motorists are being cautioned as fog and light drizzle could impact visibility on key routes, particularly the Nairobi–Naivasha Highway, with the Kikuyu to Kinungi stretch flagged as a high-risk area. “Drivers should exercise caution due to reduced visibility and slippery roads,” Dr. Gikungu advised.

Air travel may also be disrupted. Fog could intermittently affect operations at Wilson Airport and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, both in Nairobi.

The weatherman also warned that the cold season could lead to a spike in respiratory illnesses such as asthma, pneumonia, and flu. Affected regions include Nairobi, the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, parts of the Central and South Rift Valley, and sections of the western highlands.

“To stay healthy, we’re advising the public to dress warmly, heed Ministry of Health guidelines, and avoid using charcoal jikos in enclosed spaces due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning,” Dr. Gikungu emphasized.

In arid and semi-arid areas, dry conditions may lead to limited water availability. Residents are urged to conserve water and adopt efficient usage practices to get through the month.

As for rainfall, the coastal region is expected to receive near-normal amounts. Meanwhile, areas like the western highlands, Lake Victoria Basin, parts of the Rift Valley, and northwestern Kenya could see near- to above-average rainfall totals.
