Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has condemned the government’s heavy-handed approach toward Butere Girls High School students who staged a walkout in protest after police interference at the National Drama Festival in Nakuru.

The students were set to perform their play, “Echoes of War,” which has drawn attention for its critical exploration of Kenya’s governance and recent protests. However, instead of an artistic showcase, the students found themselves at the center of a government crackdown when police allegedly tear-gassed the group and prevented them from performing.

“How does this regime justify lobbing tear gas at young girls from Butere Girls who declined to stage their play ‘Echoes of War’ at the National Drama Festival?” Kalonzo questioned in his statement. “I stand with Butere Girls and all students who joined the walkout in solidarity. Kenya must remain a country where even the echoes of war are heard and heeded.”

This incident has raised concerns about the state’s response to student activism and free expression, particularly when it involves dissenting voices. The play’s political undertones have made it a flashpoint for debate on artistic freedom and the ability of young people to critique societal structures.

Kalonzo further criticized the government for allegedly arresting Cleophas Malala, former Secretary-General of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), for his involvement in the situation, calling the arrest a sign of political fear. “Malala was only arrested for exercising his rights, which are guaranteed under Article 33 of our Constitution,” Kalonzo remarked, referencing the right to freedom of expression.

As tensions rise between the government and students, many view this as a reminder of the delicate balance between artistic expression and political authority, and the role youth movements play in pushing the boundaries of political dialogue in Kenya.
