A visit to Nairobi’s Karura Forest will now come with a digital twist. Starting Friday, August 29, 2025, all entry and parking fees at the popular urban forest will only be payable through the government’s e-Citizen platform.
The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) confirmed the shift, saying the move is part of the National Treasury’s broader plan to phase out unofficial payment channels and streamline how public revenue is collected. Visitors will be required to use the official e-Citizen Paybill number 222222 to access the forest, including the Sigiria block.
KFS defended the change as a step toward cleaner, safer, and more transparent systems. “This transition is part of a nationwide initiative to improve accountability and efficiency in public service delivery, while making the visitor experience more convenient,” the agency explained.
Despite the adjustment, the day-to-day activities that draw thousands of Nairobians and tourists alike from jogging and cycling to nature walks and picnics will continue uninterrupted.
KFS further assured that its partnership with the Community Forest Association remains intact and invited the public to embrace the digital shift. “We encourage you to keep enjoying Karura Forest and share your feedback as we work to improve our services,” the statement read.
The move positions Karura among public facilities adapting to Kenya’s digital-first approach, where e-Citizen is fast becoming the default payment gateway for government services.
