Kenya has initiated diplomatic engagement with Tanzania to address growing concerns over the safety and welfare of its citizens living and working across the border following last week’s unrest.
Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs Minister Musalia Mudavadi confirmed that he held a constructive phone conversation with his Tanzanian counterpart, Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo, focusing on the protection and well-being of Kenyans in Tanzania.
Mudavadi emphasized that both governments share a commitment to ensuring the rights, safety, and dignity of Kenyans who contribute to Tanzania’s economy through trade, investment, and professional services.
He noted that Kenya has already submitted formal reports to Tanzanian authorities regarding specific incidents in which the rights of some Kenyans were allegedly violated, adding that both sides agreed to handle such matters through established diplomatic and consular channels.
“Our discussions reaffirmed the importance of addressing any emerging concerns within the framework of international conventions and the East African Community Common Market Protocol,” Mudavadi said.
He further reiterated the two nations’ mutual resolve to strengthen the longstanding friendship between Kenya and Tanzania, grounded in respect, cooperation, and a shared vision for regional unity.
