The Kenyan government has issued an urgent advisory for its citizens in Myanmar and Thailand following the devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar’s eastern region near the Thai border last Friday.
Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Principal Secretary Roseline Njogu has urged Kenyans in the affected areas to take precautionary measures and stay informed as rescue and recovery efforts continue. In a statement issued Monday, Njogu emphasized the importance of communication and registration with the Kenyan Embassy in Bangkok to ensure access to emergency assistance and timely updates.
“Register with the Kenyan Embassy—if not already registered, provide your contact details to the Kenya Embassy in Bangkok, Kingdom of Thailand, or the nearest East African Community diplomatic mission for assistance and updates. Contact: Hotline: +66990745752 Email: bangkok@mfa.go.ke,” the PS stated.
Beyond emergency response, the Kenyan government is advising citizens in the affected areas to prioritize personal safety and avoid high-risk locations. Njogu specifically warned against unnecessary travel to regions heavily impacted by the quake.
“If in a damaged or unstable building, move to a safe, open area if possible. Be vigilant about falling debris, landslides, or damaged infrastructure. Check on fellow Kenyans—reach out to other Kenyans in your area, especially students, diaspora workers, and vulnerable individuals, to ensure their well-being,” she advised.
The earthquake has led to widespread destruction, raising concerns about infrastructure stability and safety in the region. The Kenyan government continues to monitor the situation closely, ensuring that its citizens receive the necessary support and guidance during this critical time.
