A Kenyan student has died in India following a tragic accident in the city of Salem, Tamil Nadu.
The 29-year-old, identified as Daniel, reportedly fell from a building in the Kannankurichi area where he had been living in a rented house. According to Indian media, the incident occurred on April 27 while Daniel was sitting on a wall and speaking on the phone. He is believed to have lost his balance and fallen, suffering a serious head injury.
The wall, described as being in poor condition, may have contributed to the fall. Daniel was rushed to the Salem Government Hospital and remained there for two weeks. His condition deteriorated, and he passed away on Monday, May 12.
Daniel had previously been enrolled at a private college in Salem but had recently discontinued his studies. He had since moved in with a female roommate from Uganda in Kannankurichi a quiet, residential suburb often home to international students attending institutions in nearby Salem, including Periyar University.
Authorities in India have opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fall. Early reports suggest Daniel may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time, though this has not been officially confirmed.
The tragedy comes amid rising concern over the safety and well-being of Kenyan nationals in India. In recent weeks, several Kenyans have faced legal trouble after being implicated in drug-related offenses across the country.
The loss of Daniel has further highlighted the challenges facing foreign students abroad, especially those navigating life away from structured university support systems.
