The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has kicked off the process of identifying Grade 9 learners gifted in arts and sports for placement in the Arts and Sports Science Pathway when senior school begins in January 2026.

In a directive issued by KNEC Chief Executive Officer, David Njengere, schools have until October 17, 2025, to submit the details of learners with proven talent. The move is part of preparations for the rollout of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) pathways at the senior school level.

According to the council, nominations will target learners who have shown outstanding ability in fields such as Visual Arts, Sports, Theatre, Music, and Dance. Only those who demonstrate exceptional potential in these areas will be considered.

To ensure fairness, the Ministry of Education has provided a Nomination Tool that will guide teachers in assessing and selecting learners objectively. Njengere emphasized that the process must reflect learners’ genuine abilities and not rely on subjective opinions.

The Arts and Sports Pathway is expected to provide a platform for nurturing Kenya’s next generation of creative and sporting talent while giving students a structured route to pursue their passions at senior school.
