A court in California has approved a mental health diversion programme for Lil Nas X following his arrest in Los Angeles last August. The decision offers the Grammy-winning artist a chance to have the charges dismissed if he successfully completes treatment and stays out of trouble for the next two years.

During a hearing on Monday, Judge Alan Schneider ruled that the rapper whose legal name is Montero Lamar Hill qualifies for the programme, citing evidence that his actions at the time were not reflective of his usual behaviour.

The incident that led to his arrest occurred late at night along Ventura Boulevard, where he was reportedly found walking nearly naked, wearing only underwear and cowboy boots. Authorities charged him with assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest. He was also taken to hospital amid concerns of a possible overdose.

If convicted, the charges could carry a sentence of up to five years in prison. However, the diversion programme provides an alternative path focused on treatment rather than punishment. Hill had previously pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Following the incident, the artist was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a factor the court considered in its ruling. According to his lawyer, Christy O’Connor, the judge noted that Hill has shown significant improvement and responds well to treatment.

In remarks after the hearing, Hill expressed relief at the outcome, saying the situation could have been far worse. The court’s decision now places emphasis on his recovery, with the possibility of clearing his record if he meets all the set conditions.
