The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has come out strongly against sections of the press for what it terms as unfair attacks on Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo, following her decision to accept a government appointment.

Odhiambo was recently named Vice Chairperson of the Presidential Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Protests and Riots, a move that has divided public opinion. While some critics have framed her acceptance as a betrayal of the justice cause, MCK says such attacks are misplaced and counterproductive.

In a statement on Sunday, the Council argued that the criticism overlooks the potential value of Odhiambo’s role. “By insisting that the LSK President decline the role, some media houses are essentially reducing the Society’s relevance to endless criticism, instead of acknowledging its ability to help fix governance from within,” the statement read.

MCK further noted that many LSK members already serve in key state offices, including the Judiciary, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, and the Attorney General’s Office. Questioning Odhiambo’s decision, it added, is no different from questioning all those contributions.

The Council also cautioned against what it called “trial by media,” warning that prejudging Odhiambo before she even begins her work undermines the principle of fairness. “Condemning her for an anticipated failure is cynical and erodes the very independence and objectivity that the media is meant to uphold,” said MCK CEO David Omwoyo.

Calling for restraint and balance in reporting, the Council urged both the press and the public to give the panel a chance to work, saying its mandate speaks directly to justice, accountability, and national healing.
