The Universities’ Academic Staff Union (UASU) has issued a fresh seven-day strike notice to Moi University, citing unpaid salaries and failure to honour key labour agreements.
In a statement dated August 12, UASU Secretary General Constatine Opiyo said members would withdraw their labour from August 20 if the university fails to meet the union’s demands. The lecturers are pushing for payment of June and July salaries at the rates agreed in the 2021–2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
The union also wants the Return-To-Work Formula signed with the university council on November 30, 2024 fully implemented. In addition, UASU is demanding adherence to clauses on staff promotion, retirement age, and protection of workers’ rights under Article 41 and Chapter 4 of the Constitution.
Moi University has faced a turbulent period marked by financial troubles, management wrangles, and repeated strikes disruptions that have frustrated both students and parents.
Earlier this year, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba disbanded the previous university council, accusing it of poor management. A new council was inaugurated in January, with the CS expressing hope it would restore stability and rebuild the institution’s reputation.
However, with another strike looming, tensions remain high and the university’s path to recovery appears far from certain.
