They may have narrowly fallen to Strathmore Scorpions in a 3–2 thriller, but the Mombasa Sports Club (MSC) women’s hockey team aren’t hanging their heads. Instead, they’re sharpening their sticks and aiming for redemption in their next double-header showdown.

With back-to-back fixtures lined up against USIU and Trailblazers on May 31 and June 1, the coastal side is ready to fight their way up from seventh place in the Kenya Hockey Union Women’s Premier League standings.

Fresh off a strong showing at the African Cup for Club Champions in Egypt, where they bagged third place under coach Charles Otieno, MSC knows they’ve got more to offer. And according to the coach, it’s not all about the scoreline.

“People often judge based on the final result, but they rarely see the grind behind it,” said Otieno. “Every team has its own rhythm of preparation, and we’re staying true to ours. We’ve had two losses, one draw, and one win so far, but the work continues we know the results will come.”

Team captain Esther Mwikali is just as fired up. “USIU and Trailblazers are tough, but so are we,” she said. “The Strathmore match taught us some valuable lessons. Now it’s time to apply them.”

Team manager Leokadia Ofula had high praise for the squad’s youngest player many of whom are still in high school. “They showed so much maturity out there, especially against a team as experienced as Strathmore. That’s the kind of growth you want to see,” she noted.

With the fire still burning and valuable takeaways from their recent loss, MSC isn’t backing down they’re building up. And come the end of May, they’re out to prove it.
