Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has pledged financial aid to the families affected by the horrific accident along the Kampala–Gulu Highway that left at least 46 people dead on Tuesday night.

In a statement released on Wednesday, President Museveni expressed deep grief over the tragedy, sending his condolences to the families of the deceased and wishing the injured a quick recovery.

“I have learnt with great sadness about the terrible accident that occurred along the Kampala–Gulu highway, claiming many lives,” the President said. “I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wish the injured a speedy recovery.”

The Head of State directed the State House Comptroller to disburse financial support to those affected Sh5 million (about KSh185,000) to each bereaved family and Sh1 million (around KSh37,000) to every person injured in the crash.

“I have instructed the State House Comptroller to provide Shs 5 million to each bereaved family and Shs 1 million to those injured,” Museveni said.

He further called for vigilance among motorists, warning that carelessness on the road continues to cost lives.

“I appeal to all road users to remain cautious and observe traffic rules to avoid such heartbreaking incidents. May the souls of the departed rest in peace,” he added.

The Kampala–Gulu Highway, one of Uganda’s busiest transport corridors, has recorded several fatal crashes over the years due to speeding and reckless driving.
