The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has suspended the operating license of Super Metro Limited, citing non-compliance with public service vehicle regulations and road safety measures. The suspension, which takes effect from March 20, 2025, comes as the authority moves to tighten enforcement on safety standards within the public transport sector.

In a statement, NTSA emphasized that Super Metro must meet all requirements under the Public Service Vehicles Regulations, 2014, before resuming operations. “This is to notify the public that the Authority has suspended Super Metro Limited’s operator license until the company fully complies with the regulations and other set conditions,” NTSA stated. The authority further noted that the decision was aimed at ensuring the safety of passengers and other road users, stressing the need for strict adherence to transport safety laws.

The suspension has reignited public debate on the safety and accountability of public transport operators in Kenya. It follows concerns raised by passengers and road users over reckless driving, misconduct by crew members, and lack of enforcement of safety regulations by matatu operators.

Notably, Super Metro has been under scrutiny since an incident in 2024 when one of its crew members was accused of throwing a passenger out of a moving vehicle, leading to the victim’s death. The shocking incident sparked outrage, with many calling for stricter action against rogue matatu operators. Although the company distanced itself from the incident, the public demanded greater oversight and responsibility in the industry.

With the latest suspension, commuters who rely on Super Metro’s services are expected to face disruptions. However, NTSA maintains that enforcing compliance is necessary to prevent further loss of lives due to negligence and misconduct in the transport sector. It remains to be seen whether Super Metro will meet the required standards and how soon the company will resume operations.
