The corruption case facing former Migori Governor Okoth Obado may soon be dropped, following fresh indications from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

In court on Monday, state prosecutors revealed they are in the final stages of plea bargain talks with Obado, his four children, and other co-accused. The ODPP and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) asked for a month’s adjournment, noting that negotiations were at an advanced stage but required more time to conclude.

Obado and his associates had been charged over the alleged embezzlement of Ksh.505 million from the Migori County government. Initially, the EACC claimed that more than Ksh.1.9 billion had been siphoned from county coffers through questionable procurement deals involving over 20 individuals.

Although the ODPP has signaled readiness to withdraw charges once the plea deal is finalised, the EACC clarified that it has not yet signed the agreement. The case will be mentioned again on Friday.

As part of the settlement, Obado has agreed to surrender assets worth Ksh.428 million, marking a significant recovery in what was once billed as one of the biggest graft cases linked to a county chief.
