Chief Government Pathologist Johansen Oduor has confirmed that slain lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu succumbed to massive blood loss and multiple organ injuries after being shot eight times in a brutal drive-by attack.

Speaking on Thursday, September 11, after conducting a postmortem examination, Dr. Oduor revealed that two bullets were retrieved from the advocate’s body. The revelation comes amid police concerns that some spent cartridges from the scene remain unaccounted for, raising further questions about the killing.

Mbobu was gunned down on the evening of Tuesday, September 9, along Magadi Road in Karen, Nairobi. According to preliminary police reports, the advocate was caught in traffic when assailants on a motorcycle opened fire, striking him five times in the head and killing him instantly. Three cartridges were recovered at the scene.

Investigators have since established that Mbobu had earlier held a meeting at a city hotel before heading to the CBD and later embarking on his journey home. The attackers are believed to have trailed him before striking in what has been described as a well-coordinated hit.

The murder has sparked national outrage, with the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) condemning the killing as a cold-blooded, premeditated assassination that underscores the growing dangers faced by members of the legal profession. LSK President Faith Odhiambo demanded urgent action, saying the incident represents an attack on the rule of law.

Mbobu’s family, deeply shaken by the tragedy, described him as the backbone of their household and called for swift investigations to unmask those behind the assassination.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, addressing the matter on Thursday, assured Kenyans that significant progress had been made. He disclosed that several persons of interest had been identified and were already being interrogated by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

“We have been in touch with the DCI since the incident, and I am happy to note that there is some progress. Some persons of interest have been identified, and witnesses have started coming forward with useful information,” Murkomen said.

The DCI has vowed to piece together every lead to establish the motive behind the killing and bring the perpetrators to justice.
