Police in Turkana County have recovered an AK-47 rifle and ammunition following a foiled kidnapping attempt on a 16-year-old girl in Lorugum.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), officers from Lorugum Police Station rushed to Kaapus Location after receiving reports of a disturbance. Witnesses said an armed man stormed a homestead and tried to abduct the minor.

Led by the station’s OCS, officers responded swiftly, forcing the suspect to flee. Although he escaped arrest, police recovered an AK-47 rifle, six rounds of ammunition, and a spent cartridge, which have since been secured as exhibits.

A manhunt has been launched to track down the suspect, with police vowing to bring him to justice. In a statement issued Monday, NPS praised residents for their quick action in alerting authorities, urging more Kenyans to share timely information with security agencies.

“National Police Service commends members of the public for their unwavering cooperation with security agencies and urges them to continue sharing information at their nearest police post or station,” read the statement.

The recovery comes barely a day after security teams in Elgeyo Marakwet retrieved another firearm an AK-47 from a suspected bandit during an intelligence-led operation in Kabetwa, Tot.
