Two police officers captured on video assaulting and shooting an unarmed street vendor in the heart of Nairobi’s CBD have been interdicted, following national outrage over the disturbing incident.
The officers identified as Police Constables Klinzy Barasa Masinde and Duncan Kiprono were filmed during the broad-daylight altercation along Moi Avenue on Tuesday. In the footage, one officer is seen roughing up the mask vendor before the other draws his weapon and shoots at close range, leaving the man motionless on the pavement.
The victim, Boniface Mwangi Kariuki, was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital, where he underwent surgery and is reported to be in stable condition.
As public anger surged, the National Police Service (NPS) moved swiftly to announce disciplinary action. In a statement issued by spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, the service confirmed that the two officers have been interdicted and are currently under investigation by the Homicide Team at DCI Headquarters.
“The NPS deeply regrets this unjustified act and stands with the victim and his family. We are committed to ensuring accountability and justice,” the statement read.
The incident has sparked widespread protests, with many demanding the resignation of Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat. Demonstrations turned chaotic after unidentified groups disrupted the gatherings, further escalating tensions.
The viral footage, now at the center of the storm, has come to symbolize long-standing frustrations over police brutality in Kenya raising urgent questions over the use of force and the protection of civilians.
