Pope Francis has died at the age of 88. The Vatican confirmed that the pontiff passed away peacefully on the morning of Monday, April 21, following complications related to pneumonia. His health had declined in recent months, though he remained publicly active until just weeks ago.

His death brings an end to a papacy defined by humility, reform, and a bold shift in tone for the Roman Catholic Church. As the first Latin American pope and the first Jesuit to hold the position, Francis was a groundbreaking figure long before his influence took root across the globe.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he rose from a working-class background to lead the world’s largest Christian denomination. When elected in 2013, he inherited a Church struggling with scandal, division, and waning relevance in many parts of the world.

Francis responded not with dogma, but with dialogue. He chose simplicity over splendor, often prioritizing social issues like poverty, migration, inequality, and climate justice. His words didn’t always please traditionalists but they resonated with millions who saw in him a leader unafraid to ask difficult questions.

Despite ongoing health concerns, he remained committed to his role until the very end. His last appearance was a brief but poignant moment during Easter celebrations, where he delivered a final blessing from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica.

Following his passing, the Church now enters the interregnum a period of preparation before a new pope is elected. With many of the current cardinals having been appointed by Francis himself, his influence is expected to carry into the next chapter of Catholic leadership.

In line with his personal wishes, funeral arrangements will be modest. A plain wooden casket will replace the traditional elaborate papal ceremonies, in keeping with the values he championed throughout his life.

As bells toll across Vatican City and beyond, the world pauses not just to mourn a spiritual leader, but to reflect on a man who tried to reshape the heart of an ancient institution with compassion, courage, and quiet defiance.
