President William Ruto has thrown his weight behind the push to grant Meru town city status, signalling a major boost for the region’s urban ambitions.

Speaking during a spirited roadside address at Makutano Junction on Saturday afternoon, the President said the government was keen to formally recognize Meru as Kenya’s fifth city after Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and Nakuru citing the town’s rapid economic and infrastructural transformation.

“You want Meru to be the next city?” Ruto asked the crowd. “I was already thinking the same. That conversation is already underway.”

To underscore the government’s commitment, the Head of State announced a KSh2 billion investment earmarked for the construction of 16 new modern markets, aimed at energizing trade and improving the livelihoods of local traders.

In addition, Ruto directed Water and Sanitation Cabinet Secretary Eric Mugaa to fast-track the upgrade of Meru’s sewer infrastructure with a firm deadline set for December.

“These projects are not just about growth; they’re about preparing Meru to become an investment magnet,” Ruto said, linking the developments to the broader national plan for balanced regional advancement.

The president’s announcement came in response to a public appeal from Meru Governor Isaac Mutuma, who urged the national government to reward the town’s expansion and economic potential with city status.

If the plan materializes, Meru could soon join the elite list of Kenyan cities a move expected to open doors for greater investment, improved infrastructure, and enhanced public services.
