President William Ruto has hailed the just-concluded African Nations Championship (CHAN) as more than a football tournament, describing it as a living testament to Pan-Africanism.
Speaking after Morocco edged out debut finalists Madagascar 3-2 in a thrilling final at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, the Head of State said the competition reflected not only Africa’s football brilliance but also the deeper ties that unite the continent.
“From North to South, East to West, Africa’s sons and daughters displayed not only sporting excellence but also the unbreakable bonds that make us one people,” President Ruto noted, congratulating Morocco on securing their record third CHAN title.
He praised the resilience and talent on display throughout the competition, pointing out that every participating nation contributed to an atmosphere of unity and celebration. “This tournament is a reminder that Africa’s future shines brightest when we stand together,” he said.
The President also lauded the effort of organisers, officials, and players, crediting them with delivering a memorable championship that captured the spirit of the continent.
Looking ahead, Ruto emphasised that Kenya has drawn valuable lessons from co-hosting the tournament lessons he said will prove crucial as the nation prepares for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
“We take to heart the experience of hosting CHAN 2024 and will use it to strengthen our readiness for AFCON 2027,” he remarked, framing the event as a stepping stone in Kenya’s broader sporting ambitions.
For Kenya, CHAN 2024 was more than football; it was a rehearsal for the future and a celebration of Africa’s unity in diversity.
