President William Ruto has promised to breathe new life into Sony Sugar Company in Migori, committing to restore the miller’s profitability as part of a wider push to rejuvenate Kenya’s struggling sugar sector.

Speaking during a visit to the region, the President said the government will apply a strategy similar to that used in reviving Mumias Sugar, with plans to modernise Sony’s operations and boost its efficiency. A new management team will be put in place, tasked with prioritising the needs of sugarcane farmers and ensuring the company serves their interests.

The announcement came during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Alara Nyambija Livestock Training Institute in Awendo a new facility aimed at supporting livestock farmers in the county.

As part of a packed development tour, President Ruto also launched the Migori Last Mile Connectivity Project, which is expected to link 25,000 homes to electricity by December at a cost of Ksh1.9 billion.

In Rongo, the Head of State toured the ongoing construction of the Riosir Market, which is set to provide space for over 300 traders. He also commissioned the newly established St Paul’s Rongo Mixed Day Secondary School.

Further south, in Nyatike Constituency, the President presided over the launch of the Muhuru Bay Pier project. The pier aims to reduce post-harvest fish losses and increase income for local fishermen. He emphasised that the government is investing in Lake Victoria’s vast potential in fisheries, aquaculture, transport, and tourism to stimulate local economies and reduce poverty.

President Ruto also assessed progress at the construction site of Oria Modern Market in Uriri, another key infrastructure project intended to support small businesses.
