The Senate is back in session today for a special sitting focused on crucial legislation that will shape how funds are distributed across the country particularly to counties and historically marginalised regions.

Speaker Amason Kingi announced the sitting, convened under Standing Order 33(1), following a formal request by Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruyiot. The motion received backing from the minimum number of senators required to trigger an extraordinary session.

At the heart of today’s discussions is the Equalisation Fund Appropriation Bill (Senate Bills No. 7 of 2025), which proposes financial support for underdeveloped areas. Alongside it, lawmakers will debate the County Allocation of Revenue Bill (Senate Bills No. 9 of 2025), which determines how the national revenue cake is sliced among Kenya’s 47 counties.

Also on the table is the County Governments Additional Allocations (No. 2) Bill (Senate Bills No. 8 of 2025), which seeks to channel extra resources to counties to support functions that fall under the national government’s mandate.

In addition, senators will examine the outcome of mediation talks on the contentious Division of Revenue Bill (National Assembly Bills No. 10 of 2025), as well as the revised version agreed upon by both houses.

The Senate has also left room to handle any pressing messages or matters arising from the National Assembly or county legislatures before wrapping up.

Once all business is concluded, the Senate will take a break and is scheduled to resume regular sittings on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at 2:30 PM, in line with its calendar.
