The Social Health Authority (SHA) has strongly denied reports that it disbursed Ksh20 million to a non-existent hospital in Nyandiwa, Homa Bay County.

The controversy erupted after a disbursement list circulating on social media showed Nyandiwa Level 4 Hospital among facilities that received funds. Critics dismissed the entry as fraudulent, sharing images of what they claimed was an abandoned compound swallowed by bushes. A spot check by NTV appeared to reinforce the claims, capturing the facility shut down, with no health workers in sight only a cow grazing on the compound.

SHA Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Mercy Mwangangi, pushed back against the allegations, saying the hospital is both real and functional. She maintained that Nyandiwa Level 4 has been operational since the 1970s and continues to serve the community.

In a statement issued Friday, SHA described the reports as “false and misleading,” accusing sections of the media of failing the test of accuracy and fairness.

“The Social Health Authority has noted with concern a misleading article alleging that SHA disbursed Ksh20 million to a ghost facility. These claims undermine the principles of responsible journalism, including accuracy, fairness, and balance,” the statement read.
