The National Treasury has launched a new electronic procurement system, marking a significant shift in how national and county governments handle contracting. The system, known as the Electronic Government Procurement (e-GP) System, aims to enhance transparency, efficiency, and accountability in public procurement.
This initiative is part of a broader reform program backed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to modernize government procurement processes. Initially scheduled for implementation in mid-2024, the project faced delays due to budget constraints. However, with special funding secured, the exchequer has now set the rollout for early 2025.
Treasury Principal Secretary Chris Kiptoo has urged suppliers, contractors, and consultants to register on the e-GP portal (www.egpkenya.go.ke) to continue doing business with the government. Those requiring assistance can visit the e-GP offices at Nairobi’s Treasury Building or Huduma Centres across the country.
To facilitate a smooth transition, the Treasury has organized virtual training sessions for suppliers. “Suppliers will be required to register for training through links provided on www.egpkenya.go.ke under Supplier Training. Only suppliers who have registered for training will be invited to the webinar,” Kiptoo said. The training webinars will be held every Thursday from April 10 to May 30.
The digital system is expected to reduce procurement costs, shorten processing times, and enhance information management. The Treasury anticipates that automating the procurement process will minimize inefficiencies, curb corruption, and ensure value for money in public spending.
