A major shake-up has hit the University of Nairobi’s leadership as four members of the university’s governing council including Chairperson Prof. Amukowa Anangwe were arrested on Friday amid investigations into alleged abuse of office.

The arrests, led by officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), mark a significant escalation in the ongoing probe into governance issues at the institution. Prof. Anangwe was apprehended in Kisumu, while the other three council members whose identities remain undisclosed were arrested separately in Nairobi.

All four were taken to EACC headquarters at Integrity Centre in Nairobi for questioning.

The arrests come at a time when the University of Nairobi is under increasing scrutiny over accusations of administrative mismanagement. Alleged irregularities linked to the council’s conduct have raised concerns about the university’s operational stability and its ability to deliver on its academic mission.

While specific charges are yet to be made public, sources familiar with the matter say the investigation centers on decisions made by the council that may have violated public service regulations or university governance protocols.

The EACC has not yet issued an official statement detailing the next steps, but insiders say more action could follow depending on the outcome of the interrogations.
