Guinness World Records has officially ratified Kenyan environmental activist Truphena Muthoni’s 72-hour tree-hugging feat, cementing it as the longest marathon of its kind in history.

In a statement released on Monday, January 26, 2026, the global record body said Muthoni undertook the challenge to spotlight the protection of indigenous trees and celebrate the knowledge and values of Indigenous communities. The 72-hour endurance effort not only set a new global benchmark but also eclipsed her own earlier record of 48 hours, achieved in May 2025.

The confirmation puts to rest weeks of speculation online after claims circulated that the attempt had failed to meet Guinness standards. At the time, Muthoni explained that the verification process was still ongoing and urged patience as discussions with Guinness World Records continued.

The recognition has further elevated her profile as an environmental advocate, drawing praise at home and abroad. Her milestone achievement was previously acknowledged at the highest level when she was received and honoured at State House on December 15, marking a rare tribute to environmental activism in the country.
