The Law Society of Kenya has called for strict enforcement of electoral laws ahead of the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election, citing reports of alleged malpractice that could compromise the credibility of the vote.

In a statement, LSK President Charles Kanjama said the society has been monitoring preparations for the July 16 poll and is concerned by allegations of voter bribery, misuse of public resources, political intimidation and other actions that may violate electoral laws.

Kanjama stressed that any claims of electoral misconduct should be handled through established legal processes rather than being dismissed as political disagreements. He also urged all candidates and political parties to conduct peaceful campaigns and uphold constitutional principles.

To enhance transparency, the LSK announced that it will deploy accredited election observers to monitor the by-election. The observers will assess compliance with electoral laws, document their findings and provide recommendations aimed at strengthening accountability and public confidence in future elections.

The society further urged the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, the Public Service Commission, and the National Police Service to investigate any reported electoral offences and take appropriate legal action where necessary.

While reaffirming the IEBC’s constitutional responsibility to conduct free and credible elections, the LSK cautioned against postponing the by-election unless the circumstances meet the legal threshold provided under the law.
