Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Mozambique’s Prime Minister Maria Benvinda Levy have joined the growing list of African leaders mourning the passing of Kenya’s former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, describing him as a towering figure in the continent’s democratic journey.
The two visiting leaders delivered their condolences on Monday during the Mashujaa Day celebrations held at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County, just a day after Odinga was laid to rest at his Bondo home in Siaya County.
President Faye, who was the chief guest at this year’s celebrations, paid a moving tribute to Odinga, acknowledging his pivotal role in shaping Kenya’s political landscape and inspiring generations across Africa.
“On behalf of the people of Senegal, I extend our deepest condolences to the people of Kenya and to the family of the late Raila Odinga. He was a remarkable statesman whose vision and courage transcended borders,” he said.

He further conveyed his sympathy to President William Ruto and the Odinga family, describing Odinga’s legacy as one that would continue to influence Africa’s struggle for unity, justice, and democracy.
“I express my deep compassion to President Ruto, to his family, and to the people of Kenya. May his soul rest in peace,” he said.
Odinga’s burial on Sunday marked the culmination of a week of mourning that united Kenyans and global leaders in grief, following his death on October 15 while undergoing treatment in India.
