Arsenal pulled off a dramatic comeback at St. James’ Park on Sunday, edging Newcastle 2-1 with a stoppage-time goal that keeps them firmly in the Premier League title race.

The Gunners looked destined for a fourth straight defeat on Tyneside after Nick Woltemade’s header put the hosts ahead in the first half. But Mikel Arteta’s men refused to fold. Former Newcastle midfielder Mikel Merino struck the equaliser, before Gabriel Magalhaes rose highest to thump home a corner in the 96th minute sealing a statement victory.

The result propels Arsenal into second place, just two points behind Liverpool, who stumbled to their first defeat of the season against Crystal Palace the day before. For long spells, however, it seemed Arsenal would squander the chance to close the gap in what was a tense, ill-tempered contest.

The win offers a surge of belief for a side that has finished second in each of the past three seasons but is desperate to finally turn promise into silverware.

Unlike last weekend’s cautious 1-1 draw with Manchester City where Arteta’s selection drew criticism Arsenal went full throttle at St. James’ Park. Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze both returned to the starting XI, and it was Eze who almost opened the scoring inside five minutes, denied only by Nick Pope’s reflex save.

Controversy followed soon after. Referee Jarred Gillett awarded Arsenal a penalty when Pope clattered into Viktor Gyokeres, but VAR intervened and the decision was overturned after replays showed the goalkeeper had made contact with the ball.

Unfazed, Arsenal kept pressing. Leandro Trossard rattled the post before Newcastle’s opener, and though frustration mounted, the Gunners ultimately found their breakthrough and their resilience.

For Arsenal fans, Gabriel’s towering header in the dying seconds was more than just a winner; it was a statement of intent that this season might finally be different.
