Dr. Mercy Mwangangi officially assumes leadership of the Social Health Authority (SHA) today, stepping into the role of Chief Executive Officer after a rigorous selection process.
Appointed on April 11, Dr. Mwangangi emerged as the top candidate from a pool of 92 applicants. Of these, 12 individuals were shortlisted for final interviews. Her selection marks a significant step for SHA as it looks to strengthen its leadership and strategy following the dismissal of former CEO Elijah Wachira last year due to issues related to performance and professional conduct.
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale lauded the appointment, describing Dr. Mwangangi as a seasoned professional with deep expertise in health financing and policy. With over 15 years of experience under her belt, she has led efforts in universal health coverage, institutional reforms, and health systems strengthening both in Kenya and across the continent.
“Dr. Mwangangi brings a wealth of experience and a strong track record of leadership in health governance, financing, and strategic partnerships,” said CS Duale. “She has what it takes to drive SHA forward and deliver on its critical mandate.”
Before her new role, Dr. Mwangangi served as the Senior Director for Health Systems Strengthening at AMREF Health Africa. There, she led key initiatives in health financing and security, working to expand access to primary healthcare and secure development funding for universal coverage efforts.
Her appointment signals a new chapter for SHA, as the authority seeks to realign its goals and restore public confidence. With her background and leadership credentials, Dr. Mwangangi is expected to bring renewed momentum to the country’s journey toward equitable, accessible, and sustainable healthcare.
