Ed Sheeran is entering a new era one marked not just by music, but by curiosity, cultural immersion, and creative liberation. With his upcoming eighth studio album, Play, the British singer-songwriter is moving beyond chart-topping formulas to embrace something deeper: a global, genre-defying soundscape that reflects his evolving identity as an artist and world citizen.

In a candid conversation on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Sheeran opened up about what makes Play unlike anything he’s released before. “The album is so broad,” he said. “I didn’t want to just be like, ‘Here’s the single. Here’s the album.’ There’s music coming every two, three weeks.”

That intentional slow-burn release is just one sign of his refreshed mindset. At the heart of Play is a fearless willingness to step outside his comfort zone a theme that shaped both the songwriting and production.

“I’ve been more explorative with this album. I had an attitude of ‘Why not?’ and didn’t feel the need to stay in a box,” Sheeran explained. “I lived in India for a bit and worked with Indian musicians and producers… and the record has moments from all over the world.”

The project kicked off with “Azizam,” and will be followed by “Old Phone,” These early singles offer a glimpse into the borderless, cross-cultural direction the full album promises to explore.

Rather than treating global influences as novelty, Sheeran has woven them into the very DNA of Play, using collaboration and travel as tools of transformation. This isn’t just Ed Sheeran releasing another album it’s Ed Sheeran reintroducing himself as a boundary-pushing storyteller unafraid to color outside the lines.
