In a critical moment for Kenya’s democratic future, Erastus Ethekon appeared before the National Assembly’s Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC) with a clear message: if confirmed as Chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), he will guard the institution’s independence and deliver a credible 2027 election.

Facing lawmakers during his Saturday vetting session, Ethekon was firm in his commitment to constitutional fidelity, asserting that the rule of law will be his guiding principle.

“I will not allow bias to compromise my decisions,” he stated. “Kenya’s laws are clear, and if we follow due process, we can ensure elections that are free, fair, and verifiable.”

The session wasn’t without pointed questions, particularly regarding Ethekon’s previous ties to senior government official Josphat Nanok, the former Turkana Governor and current Deputy Chief of Staff at State House. Ethekon, who served as Nanok’s legal advisor during his tenure as governor, strongly dismissed any suggestion of political patronage.

“I have no familial or clan ties to Mr. Nanok,” he said. “Our past working relationship was strictly professional and will not influence my duties should I be given the responsibility to lead the IEBC.”

A seasoned lawyer, Ethekon also acknowledged the complex challenges Kenya’s electoral system has faced from public mistrust to incidents of malpractice and promised to work toward restoring faith in the electoral process.

“There’s a history of negative perceptions surrounding our elections, some grounded in truth, others in suspicion. But the remedy lies in consistent adherence to our Constitution and in rebuilding public confidence through transparency,” he emphasized.

During the vetting, Ethekon also disclosed his personal financial status, declaring a net worth of Ksh 276 million. His assets include parcels of land, livestock, shares in Safaricom, and several vehicles.

As Parliament prepares to finalize its decision, Ethekon’s appearance marks a significant step in efforts to reform the IEBC and restore credibility to Kenya’s electoral system ahead of 2027.
