Detectives in Kirinyaga East have arrested a man accused of impersonating a police officer and seized a stash of government-issued gear from his home, raising questions about how far the deception may have gone.
The suspect, identified as Newton Wachira Waweru, was tracked down after authorities received intelligence suggesting he had been posing as a member of the security forces. Upon his arrest, Waweru led officers to his residence in Makongeni, Thika, where a search revealed a collection of police and military apparel.
In a statement released by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), officers recovered two police-issue smoke jackets, two jungle green trousers, a green prison lanyard, desert combat boots, and a replica firearm items often associated with official law enforcement operations.
Waweru is currently in police custody as detectives finalize preparations to charge him in court. Investigators have also launched a wider probe to determine if he has used the fake credentials to carry out any criminal activities or defraud unsuspecting members of the public.
Authorities are urging anyone who may have encountered the suspect in a law enforcement context to come forward, as they work to uncover the full scope of his impersonation.
