Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has appealed for peace ahead of the planned Saba Saba Day demonstrations.

Speaking in Meru County on Sunday, Murkomen expressed concern over recent incidents of violent protests, where public property including police stations and courts has been destroyed.

He acknowledged growing public concern over police conduct during past demonstrations but clarified that law enforcement is not solely to blame for the unrest. The CS urged police officers to maintain professionalism and ensure that any protests held are peaceful.

“I want to assure Kenyans that the government, through our ministry, is committed to safeguarding peace. We have no intention of causing harm. Our only goal is to preserve calm and stability in the country,” he said.

As the country prepares to mark July 7 Saba Saba Day, a historic date commemorating the 1990 protests that demanded multiparty democracy uncertainty looms in several regions.

In anticipation of potential disruptions, some schools have advised students to remain at home and resume learning on Tuesday.
