Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has been dealt another blow after the High Court declined to set aside his 12-year jail sentence in a Ksh588 million corruption scandal.
Delivering the ruling on Tuesday, September 16, Lady Justice Lucy Njuguna dismissed Waititu’s application filed on August 28, 2025, seeking to overturn the sentence. The court sided with the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), who had opposed the plea, insisting that the former governor’s appeal was without merit.
The decision leaves Waititu to continue serving his term at Kamiti Maximum Prison, despite earlier attempts to secure freedom through a Ksh53 million bond. He had failed to meet the stringent bond terms, which required him to deposit a bank guarantee of the same amount.
Waititu was first sentenced in February 2025 by Milimani Anti-Graft Court Chief Magistrate Thomas Nzioki, who found him guilty of irregularly pocketing Ksh25 million from a flawed county tender. The court ordered him to serve 12 years in prison or pay a fine of Ksh53.5 million. He was also barred from holding public office for the next 10 years.
The ruling further touched on his family, with his wife, Susan Wangare, fined Ksh500,000 or face one year behind bars.
The latest setback deepens Waititu’s legal troubles as he continues to fight for freedom through an appeal that has yet to gain traction in court.
