The Kenya National Highways Authority (Kenha) has outlined alternative routes to help motorists navigate smoothly as the highly anticipated World Rally Championship (WRC) Safari Rally begins.

With the three-day motorsport event set to occupy key roads in Nairobi and Naivasha, Kenha has taken measures to ease congestion and ensure safe travel for road users.

“The World Rally Championship is zooming into town, bringing excitement and high-speed action to our roads. To keep you moving smoothly, we have mapped out alternative routes to help you avoid traffic congestion,” Kenha announced.

Motorists are urged to observe safety guidelines, adhere to speed limits, and remain vigilant while on the road.

The four mapped-out alternative routes include:

The Scenic Route: Nairobi – Rironi – Flyover (Magumu) – Njabini – Ol Kalou – Dundori – Lanet.
The Adventure Route: Nairobi – Rironi – Naivasha – Engineer – Ol Kalou – Dundori – Lanet.
The Thika Trail: Nairobi – Thika – Magumu – Ol Kalou – Dundori – Lanet.
The Suswa Shortcut: Nairobi – Ngong Town – Kibiko – Suswa.

Kenha has also advised drivers to exercise caution, especially on gravel roads, and recommends using 4×4 vehicles for rough terrain.

The WRC Safari Rally officially kicked off today, Thursday, March 20, and will run until Sunday, March 23, 2025. President William Ruto flagged off the event at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) during a grand ceremonial start.

Day one features the Super Special Kasarani (4.76km) and Mzabibu 1 (8.15km) races. On Friday, the action shifts to Naivasha, with Saturday’s races set to take place at Sleeping Warrior.

On Sunday, the final day of the championship, drivers will tackle the Oserengoni 1 (18.33km) stretch before the adrenaline-filled Hell’s Gate 2 (10.53km) showdown. The event will conclude with a podium award ceremony at 3:30 PM.

With over 100,000 spectators expected in Naivasha, the government has urged attendees to stay safe.

“Remember to be cautious because the rally cars are fast, thrilling, and spectacular. We all want to return home in one piece,” said Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya after visiting the championship headquarters at the Kenya Wildlife Training Institute (KWRI) in Naivasha.

Over 50 skilled drivers are set to battle for victory in this prestigious event.
