Kenya’s healthcare system has received a major boost following the flag-off of a fresh consignment of oxygen equipment under the Global Fund COVID-19 Response Mechanism – Oxygen Infrastructure Project.

The initiative, fully funded by the Global Fund, seeks to enhance access to medical oxygen in health facilities across all 47 counties. The new shipment includes 470 multiparameter patient monitors, 10,000 wall outlet flowmeters, and 612 oxygen analysers essential tools for improving patient care and expanding oxygen availability. These additions complement the 20,620 oxygen cylinders that have already been distributed countrywide.

Speaking during the event, Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale said the project marks a crucial step in Kenya’s journey toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring that all citizen from newborns to critically ill patients have access to safe and reliable oxygen therapy.

“This development represents real progress in strengthening our health system and ensuring that every patient receives safe and reliable oxygen therapy,” said Duale. “These accessories are crucial in enabling clinicians to deliver oxygen accurately and safely, reducing risks and improving outcomes for patients.”

The CS noted that the new equipment will greatly support early oxygen intervention for newborns and help patients suffering from respiratory conditions such as pneumonia, asthma, COPD, and other breathing complications.

Duale further emphasized sustainability and proper management of the new resources. “We will ensure regular calibration every six months, continuous training for healthcare workers, and capacity building for biomedical engineers, pharmacists, and clinicians,” he said.

He urged county governments and health facilities to set aside funds for maintenance, calibration, and spare parts to ensure the longevity and functionality of the equipment.

The CS also commended The Global Fund for its financial support and Amref Health Africa for procurement assistance, noting that partnerships grounded in government leadership are vital in driving progress toward stronger, more resilient health systems.

This milestone represents more than just the delivery of equipment it’s a step forward in ensuring that quality healthcare and oxygen access reach every corner of the country
