Kenya and China have renewed their pledge to strengthen military cooperation and deepen diplomatic engagement, in a show of solidarity during a high-profile event marking 98 years since the establishment of China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA).
At the commemorative ceremony held in Nairobi, China’s Ambassador to Kenya, Guo Haiyan, highlighted the PLA’s longstanding contribution to global peace and stability. She emphasized China’s growing interest in fostering strategic partnerships with African nations, with Kenya positioned as a key ally in the region.
“As we celebrate the 98th anniversary of the PLA and prepare to mark 80 years since the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, we reaffirm our dedication to building meaningful relationships,” said Ambassador Guo.
She underscored China’s commitment to the values of “sincerity, real results, affinity, and good faith,” describing them as the foundation of its foreign policy in Africa. “Together with Kenya, we aim to build a stronger, more prosperous Horn of Africa and contribute to lasting peace across the continent,” she added.
Kenya Army Commander, Lieutenant General David Keter, lauded the occasion as a moment to reflect on the enduring bond between the two countries. He noted that the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) have significantly benefitted from the cooperation with the PLA particularly in areas like disaster response, counterterrorism, peacekeeping, and professional development.
“Our collaboration has offered KDF personnel unique access to training programs, strategic courses, and exchange visits facilitated by the PLA and other Chinese institutions. These engagements have played a critical role in enhancing our operational readiness and expanding our military capabilities,” he said.
The event served not only as a celebration of military milestones but also as a reaffirmation of shared goals between Kenya and China in pursuit of security, peace, and mutual advancement.
