Kenya’s comedy scene is in mourning following the sudden passing of beloved online comedian Zakaria Kariuki, popularly known as KK Mwenyewe. The 23-year-old entertainer, famed for his sharp impersonations most notably of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua died on Monday night while receiving treatment at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital.

The news was confirmed by fellow comedian and frequent collaborator Kafengo, who broke the heartbreaking update in a Facebook post:
“We are heartbroken to announce the sudden demise of Zakaria Kariuki, AKA Mr KK Mwenyewe. He passed away yesterday evening while undergoing medical attention… During these sad moments, we ask for support and prayers. May his soul rest in peace.”

KK Mwenyewe captured the hearts of millions through his witty and often deadpan satirical content, which mirrored the daily experiences of ordinary Kenyans. Whether he was imitating a stern teacher, a struggling student, or a high-ranking politician, his skits offered laughter, reflection, and a uniquely Kenyan perspective.

His breakthrough came in 2022, when, as a Kisii University student, he posted a now-viral video mimicking Gachagua’s reaction to the election win. Dressed in a comically oversized suit and padded midsection, he nailed the persona and immediately caught the public’s attention. His audience grew rapidly amassing over 1.1 million followers on TikTok and another 412,000 on Facebook.

Beyond parodying politicians, KK Mwenyewe’s content touched on social issues and everyday struggles, often drawing inspiration from relatable Kenyan life. It’s this authentic approach that cemented his place as one of the most engaging voices in Kenya’s digital comedy space.

His journey also highlighted the challenges many young creatives face. In 2023, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja stepped in to help him clear his university fee balance a gesture that sparked broader conversations around support for digital artists and student well-being.

Following news of his death, an outpouring of grief flooded social media. Fans, fellow creatives, and leaders alike paid tribute to the young man who used humor not just to entertain, but to enlighten. Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah described him as a comedian whose satire “held a mirror to society not to divide, but to awaken, educate, and unite.”

KK Mwenyewe’s final skit was posted on July 4. Though he is gone too soon, his voice and impact remain etched in the hearts of those who found truth in his comedy and comfort in his laughter.
