In a move to protect Kenyans from the potentially harmful effects of unregulated gambling content, the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) has tightened its grip on gambling related advertisements aired by local media outlets.
Under new directives, media houses must ensure all gambling advertisements are classified and approved before airing, as part of a broader push by the government to encourage responsible gambling. This initiative, backed by the Executive Office of the President and communicated via the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB), reflects a growing concern over the unchecked influence of gambling promotions on vulnerable populations.
“Unclassified gambling adverts have no place on Kenya’s airwaves,” said Paskal Opiyo, Acting CEO of KFCB. “This directive aligns with the Films and Stage Plays Act, and it’s about protecting our people.”
Beyond media platforms, gambling companies are now required to obtain filming licences and submit their ads through the Technical Management System (TMS) for review and official classification. This ensures only vetted content reaches the public, fostering accountability in the gambling industry.
The move signals a firm stance by Kenyan authorities to prioritize consumer protection and promote ethical advertising practices in the gambling sector.
