Kenyans will observe Idd-ul-Fitr as a public holiday on Monday, March 31, 2025, following an official declaration by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen. The announcement, made through a special Gazette Notice on March 28, grants the nation a day off to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

Idd-ul-Fitr, one of the most significant celebrations in the Islamic calendar, marks the conclusion of a month-long period of fasting, prayer, and spiritual reflection observed by Muslims worldwide. The holiday is a time for gratitude, charitable giving, and community gatherings.

In the Gazette Notice, CS Murkomen emphasized the importance of the holiday, stating, “It is notified for the general information of the public that, in the exercise of the powers conferred by Section 2(1) of the Public Holidays Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration declares that Monday, March 31, shall be a public holiday to mark Idd-ul-Fitr.”

With the declaration, government offices, schools, and financial institutions will remain closed as the nation acknowledges the religious festivity. This year’s Ramadan, which began on the evening of February 28 and ended on March 29, has been a period of devotion and self-discipline for Muslims across the country.

The public holiday highlights Kenya’s commitment to religious inclusivity and recognition of cultural diversity. As the Muslim community comes together to celebrate, the nation is encouraged to embrace unity and mutual respect among different faiths.
