Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced that Monday, March 31, will be a public holiday to allow Muslims across the country to celebrate Idd-ul-Fitr. The holiday marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, a period of fasting, prayer, and reflection for the Muslim community.

Murkomen, in his statement, emphasized the importance of recognizing Kenya’s religious diversity and ensuring that all communities have the opportunity to observe their traditions without disruption.

Idd-ul-Fitr is one of the most significant Islamic holidays and is marked by special prayers, feasting, and acts of charity. The declaration of Monday as a public holiday is expected to enable more people to participate in the celebrations and spend time with their families.

However, Murkomen’s announcement has sparked debate, with some questioning whether he has the legal authority to declare public holidays, as this mandate typically falls under the Ministry of Interior. Kenyans now await the official gazettement of the holiday by the Interior Ministry to confirm the decision.
