As rainfall takes a brief dip across much of Kenya, the Meteorological Department is urging citizens not to let their guard down. The pause, expected to last a few days, is just that a pause. Heavier rains are likely to return soon, according to the department’s Director General, David Gikungu.
Speaking during an interview on TV47, Gikungu explained that the temporary decline in rainfall would be felt in most parts of the country. “The systems indicate that there will be some reduction in rains going into the weekend, and the season might pick up later on,” he said.
The exception, he noted, would be the coastal region, which is likely to remain wet. “The coast will continue receiving rains even into the weekend,” he added, noting that areas in the Highlands East, including Nairobi, may still experience light showers.
Beyond the forecast itself, Gikungu also addressed concerns from the public about forecast reliability. He dismissed claims of inaccuracy and defended the department’s growing investment in forecasting technology. “The use of modern systems enhances our accuracy. Weather is dynamic, but our tools today are far more reliable,” he said.
With climate unpredictability becoming the norm, the Meteorological Department is urging Kenyans to keep up with official updates. The few dry days ahead may offer a break but not a reason to be caught off guard.
