Former Chief Justice David Maraga has confirmed that part of his security detail has been reinstated, days after it was abruptly withdrawn following his participation in the June 25 protests.
In an interview with KTN on Wednesday, Maraga revealed that his driver resumed duty earlier this week, but one of his bodyguards remains absent. “They started by recalling my driver and the bodyguards. They’ve since brought back the driver, but one bodyguard has yet to return,” he said.
Maraga described the initial withdrawal as sudden and unexplained. “I woke up to be told by someone at home that officers had come, collected the security at the gate, and left just like that. No explanation, no notice,” he recounted. He added that the officers were instructed to report back to their stations and not return to his residence.
The move came shortly after Maraga joined demonstrators in Nairobi for a peaceful march honouring victims of the 2024 anti-finance bill protests. In a letter dated June 27 and addressed to Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, the former CJ expressed concern over what he saw as retaliation for his involvement.
“In the afternoon of June 25, after I marched in solidarity with the youth and families affected by the protests, one of my officers was instructed not to report for duty,” he wrote. “By the next morning, my entire security team had been recalled without warning.”
In his protest letter, Maraga reminded the authorities that the law guarantees security for retired Chief Justices. “These benefits are not discretionary. They are provided for under the Constitution and relevant laws. I therefore demand the full and immediate restoration of my security,” he stated firmly.
While the partial return of his security team marks a step forward, Maraga has made it clear that he expects full reinstatement and an explanation.
