Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has once again extended his support to former Citizen TV journalist Kimani Mbugua, who was recently found in a vulnerable state in Thika.
After receiving reports of Mbugua’s relapse, Sonko dispatched a team to locate him. They found Mbugua in Makongeni estate, Thika, Kiambu County, and brought him to Sonko’s headquarters, where he was provided with new clothing and a chance to refresh himself.
Sonko announced plans to transfer Mbugua back to the Mombasa Women’s Empowerment Network Mental Rescue Centre for further treatment. Due to concerns about Mbugua’s potential for violent behavior when under the influence, Sonko decided that he would be driven to the facility rather than flown. He also mentioned that he has chosen not to involve Mbugua’s family at this time.
This intervention follows Sonko’s previous assistance to Mbugua in 2024, when he facilitated his admission to the same rehabilitation center. At that time, Mbugua showed significant improvement and expressed gratitude for the support he received. However, recent developments indicate a need for continued care.
In addition to aiding Mbugua, Sonko has supported other individuals struggling with mental health issues. Former NTV journalist Eunice Omollo, who was also treated at the Mombasa facility, has since recovered and resumed her career as a health reporter at K24. Similarly, former boxing champion Conjestina Achieng has made significant progress and is now employed at the rehabilitation center, an arrangement aimed at preventing relapse.
Sonko’s ongoing efforts highlight the importance of sustained support and intervention for individuals facing mental health challenges. His commitment to assisting those in need underscores the critical role that community and leadership play in addressing mental health issues in society.
