Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo is demanding a swift and thorough investigation into the death of a fisherman who reportedly died by suicide while in police custody at Kipasi Police Post in her constituency.
The deceased, identified as Calvin Omondi Onditi from Ndhiwa Constituency, had been arrested Saturday night after he was allegedly caught naked inside a goat pen in Ndhuru village. Just hours after being detained over bestiality allegations, Omondi was found dead his body discovered hanging inside the police holding cell.
The unsettling circumstances surrounding the incident have prompted the legislator to call on the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to take immediate action and ensure a transparent probe into the matter.
“This is not an isolated case. We have seen too many deaths in police cells labeled as suicide. It’s time the truth came out,” Odhiambo said. “The public deserves answers, and Calvin’s family deserves justice.”
While urging IPOA to leave no stone unturned, Odhiambo also appealed to the local community to remain calm and allow investigators the space to complete their work without interference.
She stressed the need for collective cooperation in the pursuit of justice, encouraging residents to share any relevant information with authorities. Meanwhile, a postmortem examination is expected to shed more light on the cause of death.
The incident adds to growing national concern over recurring reports of detainees dying under unclear circumstances while in police custody. Odhiambo has reiterated the need for accountability, warning that such cases erode public trust in law enforcement.
“This matter must be treated with the seriousness it deserves,” she said. “We can’t normalize deaths behind bars.”
