Motorists in Nairobi should prepare for widespread traffic disruptions this weekend as the city hosts the much-anticipated Nairobi City Marathon on Sunday, July 6, 2025. With thousands of runners expected to participate, authorities have announced extensive road closures across key routes in and out of the capital.

The closures will begin late Saturday night, July 5, at 10pm, and continue through various times on Sunday, affecting both private and public transport across the city. Commuters have been advised to plan ahead, avoid affected areas, and explore alternative routes to minimize delays.

Among the most impacted roads is the Nairobi Expressway, which will be completely closed in both directions — from James Gichuru to JKIA starting Saturday at 10pm until Sunday at 3pm.

Several other major roads will be closed on Sunday, including:

  • Waiyaki Way (inner lanes): Between Musa Gitau Road and the expressway entrance, closed from midnight to 10am.
  • Mombasa Road and the Southern Bypass (Likoni Road crossing): Closed between 12am and 11am, affecting access to major roundabouts and city entry points.
  • Uhuru Highway: Closed in two segments from Southern Bypass to Langata Roundabout, and from Bunyala Roundabout to Kenyatta Avenue, between 12am and 2pm.
  • Kenyatta Avenue: Shut down from PanAfric Hotel to Uhuru Highway between 12am and 4pm.

To ease the impact, traffic officers and city marshals will be deployed throughout affected zones to assist with rerouting and keep things moving where possible.

Organisers have urged Nairobians to cooperate during the temporary closures and encouraged residents to come out and support the athletes as the city hosts one of its biggest sporting events of the year.
