Kenya is mourning the loss of a formidable voice in its history Hon. Dr. Phoebe Muga Asiyo, whose name became synonymous with courage, equality, and unshakable conviction. Her passing has united leaders across the political spectrum in celebrating a woman whose life reshaped the nation’s social and political landscape.

President William Ruto led national tributes, honouring her as a pioneering force for women’s rights and democratic progress. “Dr. Asiyo stood tall in the fight for gender equity and democratic reform. Her leadership opened doors that many women now walk through. Her legacy will continue to inspire,” the President remarked.

A former Karachuonyo MP and the first woman from Nyanza to be elected to Parliament, Asiyo’s political journey began long before the country was ready to see women in power. Yet, she broke through. She went on to serve as President of Maendeleo Ya Wanawake and represented Kenya at the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), championing women’s issues on the global stage.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga described her as a woman of unmatched courage. “She was never one to follow the path; she made her own and cleared the way for others. Phoebe Asiyo entered politics when women weren’t expected to, and she won against the odds, against giants. She embodied bravery,” he said.

Musalia Mudavadi, Prime Cabinet Secretary, noted that Asiyo’s legacy lives in every girl who dares to dream and every woman who steps into leadership. “She worked tirelessly to champion education and empowerment for women. Her impact is woven into the very structure of our national identity,” he said.

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka reflected on her role in shaping key gender legislation, including the foundation for the two-thirds gender rule in the 2010 Constitution. “She wasn’t just ahead of her time she helped define it,” Kalonzo said.

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi described her as a guiding light in Kenya’s democratic evolution. “Hon. Asiyo’s leadership was not only transformative but deeply inspirational. Her mentorship and belief in inclusive governance helped shape the leadership of today,” he said.

KANU Chairperson Gideon Moi praised her as “a towering figure in Kenyan politics and a fearless defender of women’s rights,” while Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga mourned a personal loss: “Phoebe Asiyo was a mentor, a mother figure, a fierce protector of justice. She lifted others as she rose.”

Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o recalled her wisdom and grace: “She advised, challenged, and inspired in equal measure. Her influence was profound and enduring.”

Siaya Governor James Orengo described her as “a true warrior for gender justice,” while Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo acknowledged her fearless defiance of social norms: “She paved the way when silence was expected and barriers were high.”

Johnson Muthama, Commissioner at the Public Service Commission, reminded Kenyans that the roots of today’s gender equality conversation trace back to Asiyo’s legislative efforts. “In 1997, she laid the groundwork for the two-thirds gender rule her foresight still shapes our constitutional journey,” he said.

As Kenya reflects on Dr. Asiyo’s life, what emerges is a portrait of a woman who dared, endured, and transformed. A voice that spoke when others fell silent. A leader who turned barriers into bridges. A legacy that will not fade.
