A chilling murder at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has taken a new turn after detectives arrested the prime suspect believed to be behind the brutal killing of a patient within the facility.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed that the suspect was apprehended on Thursday evening, in connection with the gruesome death of Edward Maingi Ndegwa, who was admitted to Ward 7B on July 11, 2025.

The tragedy unfolded quietly on the afternoon of July 17. Earlier that day, a nurse had checked Maingi’s vitals around 11:30 am, and a family member who visited an hour later left at 1:30 pm, describing the patient as “stable.” But just 30 minutes later, at around 2:00 pm, a hospital cleaner noticed a trail of blood oozing from the patient’s neck.

What followed was a swift response by detectives, who launched a scene investigation that led them from the bedside, through bloody slipper marks, to a nearby toilet, and eventually to a side ward where the suspect was also admitted.

Inside the room, investigators discovered key pieces of evidence: a pair of blue slippers, a knife concealed in gloves, and a bloodied bedsheet. These items have been submitted to the National Forensic Laboratory for in-depth analysis, which is expected to solidify the case against the suspect.

As detectives dug deeper, more disturbing details emerged.

The man in custody, it turns out, had been receiving treatment at KNH since December 1, 2024. He is also the main suspect in a separate hospital murder earlier this year. That incident involved the killing of 40-year-old Gilbert Kinyua, who was found dead in Ward 7C under suspicious circumstances between the night of February 6 and the morning of February 7, 2025.

That case had already been forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) pending further legal action. With this second incident now tied to the same individual, pressure is mounting on authorities to address safety protocols within the hospital.

As investigators continue to piece together the timeline and motive behind the killings, the spotlight remains fixed on KNH not just as a place of healing, but now, alarmingly, a crime scene.
