Transport authorities have moved swiftly to crack down on reckless driving after a video of a passenger bus making a risky overtake on the Nairobi–Mombasa highway went viral online.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) said it had identified the Tahmeed bus driver involved through the relevant SACCO and ordered him to undergo a compulsory driving retest. The authority said the action forms part of stricter enforcement measures aimed at improving road safety.
NTSA also appealed to the public to actively report dangerous driving, urging motorists and passengers to share details such as vehicle registration numbers, locations, and time of incidents. The authority assured Kenyans that all credible reports would be acted upon without delay.
The widely shared footage triggered public anger, with social media users accusing the bus driver of engaging in a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre alongside a truck allegedly transporting muguka. As criticism mounted, the bus company issued a statement distancing itself from wrongdoing, insisting the driver had remained within his lane and adhered to traffic rules. NTSA, however, dismissed the defence and proceeded with enforcement action.
Separately, the authority revealed it had also taken disciplinary steps against another public service vehicle driver filmed driving recklessly on the Kakamega–Nairobi route, signalling a broader crackdown on traffic violations across the country.
